What We’ve Been Unable to Shout Out to the World
A guided tour of the Jewish Historical Institute’s permanent exhibition
The title of the permanent exhibition, “What we’ve been unable to shout out to theworld”, at Warsaw’s JHI is a quote from a testament written by David Graber (1923-1942), a 19-year-old boy who was a member of the clandestine group Oneg Shabbat. The group was established by a Jewish historian and social worker, Dr. Emanuel Ringelblum (1900-1944) in the Warsaw ghetto in 1942. Its aim was to collect documents, testimonies, and other materials as well as describe the Jewish life and death under the German occupation. Today, these documents form what is called the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, or the Ringelblum’s Archive.
Only three out of several dozen members of the Oneg Shabbat survived the war. David Graber was not one of them. Whenever I come across his words, I am deeply moved. Graber was astonishingly aware of the role he and his comrades played, and of the importance of their actions. His only wish was that the world will hear of what had happened to the Jewish people in the 20 th century. I invite you to join me for a guided tour in the Jewish Historical Institute where you can learn more about this unprecedented in a scale act of civic resistance.
